Press Statements

The United Nations Mandated University for Peace and its Africa Programme based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia has received numerous inquiries and reports of the African Dignity Prize awarded to President of Sudan, Omar Al-Bashir in a ceremony that took place last month at the Nelson Mandela Building, Addis Ababa University.

The UPEACE Africa Programme would like to inform everybody that it has not awarded President Bashir or any other Head of State any prize under its mandate. The presence of UPEACE Africa Programme at the event was at the invitation of Addis Ababa University which is the host Institution for the UPEACE Africa programme and which offers common academic programs.

The UPEACE Africa Programme would like to reiterate its full commitment to peaceful solutions and the role of the United Nations stated in our Charter, and its supports to the role of the International Criminal Court. Also, UPEACE condemns all human rights abuses which have taken place in Dafur, strongly condemns the war and its attendant death toll in South Sudan and supports the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Africa.
